What is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence, value and rights based approach aimed at improving the lives of individuals whose challenging behaviours are caused by cognitive or intellectual disabilities.

Behaviours that are hard to deal with can have a big effect on a person’s ability to learn, grow, feel safe, and have relationships. Some of these behaviours may be damaging property, being violent or abusive, acting without thinking, or hurting themselves. While often misunderstood, making the surroundings safe and supportive can help lessen the severity of these behaviours.

The Positive Behaviour Support plan focuses on each person’s specific needs and helps them learn new skills and improve their quality of life. It also encourages more community participation and inclusion by reducing the frequency and impact of behavior challenges.

Behaviour Support Levels

  1. Interim Support (5-60 Hours):
    • Identify behaviours where there is a risk of harm to self or others.
    • Consult with the individual, family, carers, and other relevant parties.
    • Review existing data and implement necessary behaviour recording tools.
    • Provide guidance on protective actions for the support environment.
  2. Intermediate Support (30-80 Hours):
    • Conduct a Functional Behaviour Assessment.
    • Facilitate an immediate review by a medical professional, if required.
    • Develop applications for approval and consent to meet Restrictive Practices regulations, if needed.
    • Create an Interim Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
  3. Comprehensive Support (60-150 Hours):
    • Perform a Functional Behaviour Assessment and analysis.
    • Coordinate multi-disciplinary stakeholders in collaborative planning.
    • Develop a Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
    • Provide training to implement strategies, reviews, and evaluations.
    • Offer critical incident debriefing.

Positive Behaviour Support FAQs

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach designed to improve the quality of life for individuals who display challenging behaviours. It focuses on understanding the reasons behind the behaviours and creating strategies to reduce their occurrence and impact, while promoting skill development and community inclusion.

Positive Behaviour Support is beneficial for individuals with cognitive or intellectual disabilities who exhibit challenging behaviours that impact their learning, development, relationships, or safety. It can also support families, carers, and service providers to better understand and manage these behaviours.

Challenging behaviours are actions that are unpredictable, complex, and significantly impact an individual’s quality of life. These may include physical or verbal aggression, property damage, impulsive actions, or self-injury. Positive Behaviour Support aims to address these behaviours by understanding their triggers and providing tailored support.

A Functional Behaviour Assessment is a detailed evaluation used to understand when, where, and why challenging behaviours occur. It identifies the triggers and functions of the behaviour, which helps in developing effective Positive Behaviour Support Plans that work for the particular individual.

Restrictive Practices are measures used to manage challenging behaviours that may pose a risk to the individual or others. These practices are regulated, and their use must comply with strict guidelines. Positive Behaviour Support focuses on reducing and eliminating the need for Restrictive Practices through proactive and evidence-based strategies.

Positive Behaviour Support includes training and support for families, carers, and staff to ensure they can effectively implement the strategies outlined in the Behaviour Support Plan. This helps create a consistent and supportive environment for the individual.

To access Positive Behaviour Support through the NDIS, speak with your Support Coordinator or NDIS Planner about including Behaviour Support in your plan. The funding is based on the NDIS Price Guide and is tailored to your individual needs and goals.

Positive Behaviour Support focuses on reducing challenging behaviours, building skill development, and increasing community inclusion. By addressing the root causes of behaviours and promoting positive changes, Positive Behaviour Support helps individuals achieve their goals and improve their overall quality of life.

Yes, Positive Behaviour Support is designed to address behaviours of varying complexity. For individuals with more complex needs, a Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan is developed, which includes multi-disciplinary collaboration, detailed assessments, and ongoing reviews to ensure the strategies are effective.
