Discover Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)

NDIS Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is designed as a transitional solution, offering support for up to 90 days to help you bridge the gap between your current situation and your long-term housing.

This accommodation is ideal if you are:

  • A young person at risk of entering an aged care home.
  • Ready for discharge from hospital or justice setting but waiting for home modifications, assistive technology, or support equipment.
  • An eligible SDA participant is waiting for a suitable Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) property.

It’s important to note that NDIS MTA funding covers accommodation only. Any additional supports required in the home will need to be funded separately, and you are responsible for your everyday living expenses.

MTA NDIS Eligibility

To be eligible for Medium Term Accommodation (MTA), you must:

  • have a long-term home to move into after the MTA
  • be unable to move into that home because your disability supports aren’t ready, and
  • be unable to stay in your current accommodation while you wait.

MTA funding is only provided if it meets the NDIS funding criteria. Eligibility criteria may differ if you are being discharged from a hospital or a justice setting.

If you don’t meet these eligibility requirements, there may be other home and living supports or mainstream and community options available.

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) FAQs

MTA is funded under your NDIS plan as part of your core budget if it meets your disability support needs and is considered reasonable and necessary. The funding only covers the cost of accommodation and does not include everyday living expenses such as food, internet, or electricity.

No, MTA funding only covers the cost of the accommodation itself. Any additional supports, such as personal care or community access, must be funded separately through your NDIS plan.

MTA is generally funded for up to 90 days. In exceptional circumstances, such as delays in home modifications or the availability of a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) property, funding may be extended beyond 90 days with appropriate evidence.

No, MTA funding cannot be used for day-to-day living costs such as food, groceries, or transport. Participants are responsible for covering these expenses themselves.

No, MTA is not intended for emergency housing. If you require immediate housing support, other mainstream or community services may be able to assist.
