Case Manager NDIS, Cairns Region, Queensland
Hey there! Welcome to my journey from a Disability Support Worker to a Case Manager with Kanda. I’m excited to take you behind the scenes and share the ups, downs, and everything in between of my career evolution. So grab a cuppa and join me as I reflect on the challenges, triumphs, and unforgettable moments that have shaped my path in Queensland’s vibrant community of Cairns Region.
In 2018
I began my journey as a support worker, like green from the ground, immersing myself in in-home aged care and disability support. Initially, I provided respite care for dementia clients twice a week, offering much-needed relief to their families. Then, in 2021, I joined Kanda (formerly known as Southern Cross Support Services), still in a support worker role. However, my determination and dedication quickly propelled me into a team leader position.
Working in Cairns meant a daily commute from Mareeba, where I live, adding up to two hours on the road each day. Despite the travel, I was fully immersed in my role, providing support to clients in a Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) house. These clients had complex care needs, ranging from wheelchair dependence to being bed-bound and nonverbal. One client could only consume pureed and thickened fluids. It was challenging, but deeply fulfilling work.
When the opportunity arose for a Team Leader position
I jumped at the chance. My experience and dedication were noticed and paid off, and I was fortunate enough to be selected for the role. In addition to managing the SDA house and its support team, I continued to work with other clients, constantly upskilling and refining my abilities. From organising team meetings and stakeholder gatherings to assisting with rostering and providing hands-on support, I was fully invested in my role.
Despite the demands, I remained committed to delivering exceptional care and fostering a positive work environment. I prioritised communication for quick and efficient updates. This not only streamlined operations but also strengthened rapport among team members.
As time went on
My responsibilities expanded further. With my daughter’s well-being as a single mum and my own roots in Mareeba in mind, I opted to remain in the area and take on additional responsibilities. Collaborating closely with my case manager, Teresa, we successfully opened new programs in the community, catering to various client needs.
In October 2023
I was given the opportunity to step into the role of Acting Case Manager for a brief period. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience, further solidifying my passion for making a difference in the lives of both clients and my teams.
During my tenure as Acting Case Manager, I fully immersed myself in the role, embracing its challenges and seizing every learning opportunity. Collaborating closely with colleagues and stakeholders, I ensured seamless operations and upheld our commitment to delivering exceptional service. I naturally have a competitive drive, and when Teresa’s case was handed to me, I recognised its complexity. Stepping into this challenge, I was motivated to excel, also supported by a great team in Cairns Region under Renee’s management. Their assistance ensured I never faltered and could always seek help when needed.
The extra mile I navigated through during this period positioned me favourably for future opportunities within the organisation.
Now
I am thrilled to announce that I have been offered a permanent position as a Case Manager in the Cairns Region. This marks a new chapter in my journey, and I sincerely hope that my story serves as inspiration for you, whether you’re a Support Worker or a Team Leader, in your pursuit of career growth. Remember, every step forward is a testament to your dedication and passion. Keep striving for greatness and have good self-care along the way!
